150 Years After the Meiji Restoration--Japanʼs Global Engagement Then and Now

This event is organized by University of Toronto’s Centre for the Study of Global Japan.

On March 8, the University of Toronto’s Centre for the Study of Global Japan will be holding the symposium 150 Years After the Meiji Restoration--Japanʼs Global Engagement Then and Now in the Campbell Conference Facility of the Munk School of Global Affairs.

This year not only marks the 90th anniversary of Japan-Canada relations, but is also the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration. Canada also celebrated the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. Looking back on the journey taken by both countries the in the past century and a half, this symposium will focus on the modernization of Japan started by the Meiji Restoration, and discuss Japan’s future as well as Japan-Canada relations.

The symposium will feature the following invited speakers: Ms. Koko Kato, Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Japan; Dr. Yuichi Hosoya, Professor of International Politics at Keio University in Tokyo; and Dr. Tomoko T. Okagaki, Professor of Political Science at Japan’s Dokkyo University.
