Disaffected Heroes: Japanese film posters of the late 20th century
The focus of this exhibition is the contemporary “disaffected” heroes of Japanese films. The Japanese films and their posters selected for this exhibition feature heroes that are defined by a sense of loss: a loss of meaning, of traditional values, of respect for authority and the law. The heroes are extreme non-conformists—gangsters, drifters, and delinquents—desperately searching for meaning and belonging. The world depicted in these films is often nihilistic and violent: a world spinning out of control. Although the films are dark in subject matter, many are also comical or satirical.

Yoko Tawada Reading
Book: The Bridegroom was a Dog. Yoko Tawada's writing questions reality, but attempts no explanation. The Bridegroom Was a Dog is a metaphysical mystery that overwhelms our sense of order and logic. It is the story of a beautiful, unconventional, small-town schoolteacher whose life takes off on unpredictable tangents. The book's dazzling examination of contemporary Japanese society is also a brilliant complement to Japanese myths and storytelling. Born in Japan, Tawada now lives in Germany. She has won the Japanese Akutagawa Prize and the Albert-von-Chamisso-Prize, a German award for foreign writers that recognizes their contribution to German culture.
