Poems for the Earth: Exhibition by Warabe Aska
The Japan Foundation Toronto presents an exhibition featuring works by Warabe Aska, a Toronto-based artist whose paintings and drawings accompanied the UNICEF-supported picture book Lulie the Iceberg (1998) written by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamodo of Japan. The exhibition Poems for the Earth consists of over 30 works by Aska spanning an 11-year period, from 1987 to 1998. The exhibition includes oil paintings, drawings, sketches and limited-edition prints. Several images from the book Lulie the Iceberg will be on display.

Spring Classes at the JCCC
Time to start thinking about signing up for one(or more) of the many classes offered at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. The JCCC offers classes in Bunka Shishu, Ikebana, Koto, Shodo, Sumi-e and the very popular Japanese Language for Adults. 2003 Workshops include Reiki, Raku and Taiko. Fun and educational Kamp Kodomo is back for the Spring Break and why not try out one of the five different martial arts offered.

RE DESIGN - Daily products of the 21st Century
Curated by renowned Japanese graphic designer Kenya Hara, Re-design is an exhibition and experiment about material culture and design. Thirty two Japanese architects, artists, and designers were challanged to rethink common products tied to the lifestyle and cultural vernacular of daily life in Japan. The exhibition invites us to question the function and aesthetics of everyday objects. Adult diapers, tea bags, matches and cockroach traps are just a few examples of the objects that were deconstructed and redesigned.
The Design Exchange has commissioned five leading designers from across Canada to contribute new work to this award winning exhibit. The exhibition originated in 2000 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Takeo Co. Ltd.,a Japanese paper trading company.

"Film as Thought as History"
By Dr. Eric Cazdyn, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto.
Eric Cazdyn is Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies, Comparative Literature and Cinema Studies at the University of Toronto. His book, The Flash of Capital: Film and Geopolitics in Japan, has been published recently by Duke University Press. How does film relate to thinking? Or history to film? By introducing the work of Haneda Sumiko (one of the first and most important female filmmakers in Japan), Professor Cazdyn will re-think how these three categories (film/thought/history) relate to each other and how such a re-thinking opens up to an alternative story of post-war Japanese history.

DIASPORA: MAPPING COMMUNITY ACROSS BORDERS
A two day symposium at the University of Toronto at Scarborough
Directly linked to literature, history, and visual and performing arts courses at UTSC, the aim of the two day symposium "Mapping Community Across Borders" is to address the questions and consider the difficulties associated with the notion of diaspora. Highlights include a joint reading by Lillian Allen and Clifton Joseph, as well as panel discussions with various UofT and non UofT experts including: Chan Ka Nin, Kerri Sakamoto, Lora Carney (UTSC), Caryl Clark (UTSC), Franca Iacovetta (UTSC), Norm Ravvin (Chair of Jewish Studies at Concordia), and Morton Weinfeld (McGill). As part of the "Japanese Diaspora" panel on Day 2, the symposium will feature a special performance by the acclaimed Japanese Taiko group, the Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble.

Guest Speaker, Robert Ulmer, Vice President, Global Japanese Relationships, Bank of Nova Scotia.
Robert Ulmer received his undergraduate degree at York University, and his doctorate at Yale University. He also studied at Waseda University, and was visiting research fellow at Hosei University, Tokyo.
Recently returned from Japan, where he served as The Bank of Nova Scotia's senior officer for almost ten years, Robert Ulmer will offer his observations on the latest developments in Japan's reformation. Questions and answers in Japanese and English are welcome.

A Taste of Sake: Tasting the Regional Jizake of Japan
Presented by both Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and The Canada Japan Society of Toronto.
There will be several jizake(regional sakes) from Japan that are not available in Canada which will be featured. The discussion will be lead by Shotaro Ozawa of Ozawa Canada and will concentrate on tasting techniques and charts, vocabulary and matters of connoisseruship. A Japanese meal can also be pre-ordered to go with the tasting.
Premium Jizake to be featured include: Tenzan (Saga Prefecture), Onikoroshi (Shizuoka), Sudohonke (Ibaraki), Tama no Hikari (Kyoto).

Haru Matsuri will also feature arts and crafts demonstrations, such as Ikebana, Bunka Shishu, Sumi-e and Shodo. There will be colourful booths such as doll making, origami and more. There will be martial arts demonstration in Aikido, Iaido, Judo, Karate and Kendo. There will also be Odori, knows as traditional Japanese dance, featured on the main entertainment stage. Come and enjoy a tranquil moment at the Tea Ceremony, and also don't forget your appetite!!Delicious tempura and other enticing delights await your tastebuds.

Yehan Numata Lecture: Death and Great Compassion
Starting this year, through the generous sponsorship from the BDK Canada, the Toronto Buddhist Church will be hosting a series of lectures in honour of the founder of the BDK, Reverend Yehan Numata.     In this humorous police drama, Aoshima, a Tokyo police detective working in the Bayside Precinct, is continually frustrated by the hierarchy and red tape that plague the system. His friend Muroi is climbing the ladder of the police bureaucracy. Muroi has made a pact with Aoshima that while Aoshima looks after the streets, Muroi would make life easier for the cops on the beat.     RAKU Pottery Workshop
    In this 2 day workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of Raku under the supervison of skilled Raku craftsmen and will have the opportunity to create and glaze your own pieces.
    Raku or rakukyaki is a method of firing pottery based on a sixteenth century Japanese technique.
    Time: 10:00 am to 4:00pm
    FEE: $80. for both days, $20 for clay, firing and glaze.

    Volunteers are needed in making hundreds of pounds of mochi (sticku rice cakes) to be sold at our bazaar. Volunteers are also needed on Friday May 2 to make hundreds of rolls of sushi, to be sold at the bazaar. No experience necessary for either day. Come and share your cooking talents or come to get some hands-on experience in the mochi / sushi process. If cooking is not your forte, volunteers are also needed on May 2 to help set-up and sort for the bazaar.

    A charming Sumo comedy form the "Shall we dance" Team. In Japan, the intrusion all-invasive, displacing older traditions. Kyoritsu University's sumo club is losing members to more popluar pursuits such as football and scuba diving. In order to survive, he recruits some highly unorthodox recruits including a red-haired rugby-playing gaigin, an underweight and under-confidendt Aoki, and Yamamoto, a spoiled rich brat who is forced to join a sports club in order to graduate.
    This hilarious and heart-warming comedy is an interesting and comical peek into the world of sumo and the struggle between comtemporary and traditional values in Japanese society.

    JETRO is pleased to announce that the 8th JETRO Business Japanese Proficiency Test will be held on October 18, 2003. The JETRO Test is Japan's leading examination of business-oriented communication skills for people studying Japanese as a second language.
    Test Date: October 18, 2003
    Application period: Now until August 8, 2003
    Test Locations: Toronto-University of Toronto, Vancouver-Simon Fraser University
    Please note that the format for the JETRO Test has changed from previous years. In the past, the listening and reading portion of the test was divided into three separate levels. Under the new format, there will be only one test, and applicants will be given a point score similar to that of other standardized tests such as TOEFL or GMAT. This will allow candidates to better evaluate their performance and progress from one year to the next.

    REIKI share at the JCCC
    Reiki is a Japanese method of hands on healing which originated in ancient Tibet. Benefits include deep relaxation, emotional balancing, pain relief, alignment and detoxification. A Reiki share is an opportunity for the public to experience a Reiki Treatment and for Reiki practitioners to trade treatments. There will be a brief introduction on Reiki, followed by a guided meditation and then an icebreaker that will give people a chance to meet. The rest of the time will be spent on treatments. Healings will be given in order of arrival (one per person)

    The Story of the 47 Ronin
    On the snowy night of January 30, 1703, 47 Ronin, former vassals of the Ako Clan, stormed the residence of Lord Kira Yoshinaka determined to avenge the wrongful death of their Lord, Asano Naganori. Two hours into the raid, Kira was beheaded and his head was taken to Sengakuji Temple to be placed on the grave of Lord Asano. The Ronin were arrested and while they awaited their fate, all of Japan was swept up in admiration and applauded their sense of duty and honour. To learn the fate of these 47 Ronin, join the JCCC in celebrating the 300th anniversary of the chushingura story. There will be a series of workshops and many guest speakers.     The theme is Japanese Woodblock Prints, Ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world), a stlye of woodblock printing, became a poplular art form during the Edo period, especially during the Genroku era of Japanese history, when the political and military power was in the hands of the shoguns, and the country was virtually isolated from the rests of the world.
    The workshop will be led by Mr. Kaoru Kamimura who has specialized in Japanese prints for 27 years and has evaluated prints and antiques for museums and collectors for the past 20 years and Mr. David Bond, who has lived in Japan for 8 years and is an avid collector of Japanese prints. The workshop will examine how the exploits of the Ronin were interpreted by famous woodblock print artists of the day.

    Have you ever wanted to try your hand at playing the Japanese Shamisen? The JCCC will be offering a 3 session workshop series taught by a Japanese Master of the instrument. Singer, performer and master/teacher Yoko Hiraoka, a resident of Colorado has taught world music ensemble at the University of Colorado and currently teaches at the Naropa Institute in Boulder.

    Mr. Yoshino is the former President and CEO of Honda Motor Co. Ltd. He has received a Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautics and Astronautics and began his career with Honda Motor Co. Ltd., in 1963 and for the next 24 years worked primarily in Research and Development areas. He then managed two of Honda's Largest manufacturing facilities, including four years as President of Honda of America Mfg. in Ohio.
    In 1994 he was appointed President, Honda R&D Co. Ltd., and then from June 1998 until June 2003, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
    Under his five-year presidency, he has enhanced Honda's image and global reputation through many initiative, including the introduction of new products and the demonstration of a strong commitment to safety and environmental leadership.

    This year's show features the popular Enka and Kayokyoku intertwined with the funny skits. Over 30 songs represent every region of the Japanese archipelago from Hokkaido to Okinawa.
    Admission is $15.00 each and will go on sale on October 14.

    2003 New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance
    2003 is fast coming to an end and once again the JCCC New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance committee is busy planning a festive fun-filled evening to celebrate the old and ring in the new.
