Utamakura Sites
The Japan Foundation, Toronto and LEE, Ka-sing Gallery are proud to present the exhibition Utamakura Sites by British artist John L. Tran.
Utamakura Sites revisits sites throughout Japan that have associations with literature dating back as far as the 7th century. In this photographic documentation of contemporary landscape, the high culture of classical Japanese poetry and the artifacts and detritus of modern life collide to produce images that speak of the interaction between self and world.
The Toronto exhibition is a selection of the entire Utamakura project, which was produced over three years and covered 190 sites in total. Photographs from this exhibition were originally part of exhibitions held at the Asuka Historical Museum, Japan in 1998 and at the Pitshanger Manor Gallery in London, England in 2001. THE TALE OF ZATOICHI: Volume 1 - DVD Night
Zatoichi, the wandering masseur and master swordsman, is a mercenary hero with a difference: he's blind, and no less deadly for it. In his 1962 debut, Ichi shuffles into a gangster-run town like a wry con man, fleecing the dim-bulb gambling thugs and sponging off a local mob boss who wants the deadly Ichi on his side in an impending gang war. Released the same year Akira Kurosawa unleashed Yojimbo, stocky Shintaro Katsu's modest and soft-spoken Ichi couldn't be more different from the dynamic Toshiro Mifune's swaggering and arrogant Yojimbo. Director Kenji Misume does attempt to imitate Kurosawa’s dynamic action, but when Ichi finally lets loose after avoiding conflict for the entire film, his spare, sudden attack makes a startling contrast to the usual flashing swords and furious movements. Zatoichi returned in 25 sequels and a long-running TV series, always played by Shintaro Katsu.
