Poll Shows Canadians Support Closer Links with Asia
A majority of Canadians see closer links with Asian economies as vital to the well-being of Canada and support increased trade and investment with the region, according to a new national poll commissioned by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and released today. The poll found that more than 70% of respondents believe 'Asia is a region of rapid and dynamic economic growth' and that 'the Government of Canada should promote increased trade with Asia.' However, there are sharp regional differences in the survey results, with British Columbians and Albertans much better informed about Canada's relations with Asia and much more supportive of stronger ties with the region, including increased teaching about Asia in schools. The national poll was conducted in April-May 2004 and is accurate to within 4.5 percentage points 19 times out of 20. The survey was designed and developed by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada with funding from Foreign Affairs Canada. Full details of the survey can be accessed at Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada Press Release Archives.
