The Japan Society was pleased to host a luncheon in Toronto examining the rapid deepening of Canada–Japan relations. Our keynote speaker, Goldy Hyder (President & CEO, Business Council of Canada), highlighted how the relationship is evolving from traditional trade ties into a comprehensive strategic partnership, especially in energy, critical minerals, and defence and security. He emphasized Canada’s role as a reliable energy and resource partner for Japan and the broader Indo‑Pacific, as well as growing alignment on economic security and resilient, values‑based supply chains.
From the transactional and legal perspective, John Amanalidés and Carly Klinkhoff, Partners at Torys LLP, illustrated how this strategic shift is already visible in the market through major cross‑border investments such as Kirin Holdings’ acquisition of Jamieson Wellness and Umios Corp’s acquisition of High Liner Foods. They noted that Japan is now Canada’s fourth‑largest source of foreign direct investment, while Canadian capital is also expanding its presence in Japan. The Japan Society thanks Torys LLP for generously hosting and sponsoring the event, and extends its sincere appreciation to Goldy Hyder, John Amanalidés and Carly Klinkhoff for sharing their valuable insights.
