Japan Bowl Ontario 2020

Japanese Language & Culture Competition for High School Students

The Japan Bowl Ontario 2020 was organized and successfully held by Huron University and The Japan Society on Saturday, April 25th, 2020.

To ensure the health and safety of our community and participants and to prevent the risk and spread of COVID-19, we had once decided to cancel the event that was originally scheduled on March 27th. Since then, however, we have been seeking another way to host this event. Thanks to the technologies that are available to us, we were delighted to proceed with the event online.

The Japan Bowl® is a Japanese language and culture competition for high school students initiated and developed by The Japan-America Society of Washington DC in 1992. The Japan Bowl Ontario is not an exam. It is designed to demonstrate achievement of knowledge of Japanese culture, society, daily life, history, geography, and current events. For the students, it provides opportunity to challenge and enjoy their study. Our goal is to strengthen students’ interest in Japan and encourage them to continue their connection with Japan and deepen further understanding of Japan in their future. We aim the students to become leaders of the relationship with Japan.

We welcomed 4 schools, 4 teams, 12 students to participate and volunteer, staff, guests including Ms. Takako Ito, Consul-General of Japan in Toronto. All the participants challenged a wide range of questions. According to the points they received at the competition, the participants were awarded with prizes. In addition, all participants will receive gift package donated by donors. We had a presentation from Mr. David Denis sharing his experience of his trip to Japan on Japanese government’s Kakehashi Project.

We would like to thank all the supporters for their involvement and generous support to let us continue this event.
