Earlier this month, Ava DuVernay's ARRAY Releasing acquired the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival Selection, AINU MOSIR. An intimate look into the indigenous Ainu community of Hokkaido, Japan, this tender coming-of-age drama is set to debut on Netflix on November 17th. Written and directed by Takeshi Fukanaga, AINU MOSIR captures the struggle of upholding traditions in a modern world with an all-Ainu cast. Recognized with a special jury mention at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, AINU MOSIR is Takeshi Fukunaga’s second feature film. His first film, OUT OF MY HAND, also distributed through ARRAY in 2015, was nominated for the John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award.
AINU MOSIR is set in northern Japan’s Hokkaido community and follows 14-year-old indigenous Ainu teen Kanto (Kanto Shimokura), who searches for a spiritual connection with his recently deceased father with the help of a family friend. Torn between maintaining the tradition of his ancestors and lured by the mysteries of adulthood, Kanto is on a journey to find his sense of self.
